As we get older, staying socially connected becomes even more important for wellbeing. Friendships, shared activities, and a sense of belonging help seniors stay engaged, supported, and part of a welcoming community. At Community First Step, we understand the value of these connections and are committed to providing multicultural support through our free seniors groups. These programs offer a safe and inclusive space where seniors can build friendships, learn new skills, and feel supported in a vibrant community.
Community groups: A place to connect and grow
Our social groups for seniors offer more than just activities – they provide meaningful opportunities to socialise, share experiences, and support each other. Whether you're looking to try something new, meet people from similar cultural backgrounds, or improve your English, there's a group for you.
We offer a variety of free community groups and classes, including:
Sewing and crafts: Tuesdays, 12:00 – 2:00pm. A relaxing space to be creative while socialising.
Vietnamese men’s group: Wednesdays, 2:00 – 4:00pm. A culturally specific group for friendship and shared experiences.
Arabic women’s seniors group: Thursdays, 10:00am – 12:00pm. A supportive environment for women to connect.
English conversation class: Thursdays, 12:30 – 2:30pm. A great way for seniors to build confidence in English communication.
A safe and supportive space for seniors
Our Community Hub, open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, also serves as a vital resource for seniors seeking support and guidance. We offer a range of free services that help seniors maintain independence and navigate essential systems, including:
Form filling assistance: Helping with applications for electricity, pensions, housing, and rent.
Food hampers: Providing essential food support to those in need through our partnership with OzHarvest.
Emergency relief: Offering support for those facing financial hardship.
Assistance navigating complex systems:Â Helping seniors access Centrelink, MyGov, aged care, and health services, as well as providing referrals and assistance in accessing other essential services.
Digital education and support: Helping seniors improve digital literacy and confidently access online services.
The impact of connection and community
Seniors groups provide connection, support mental wellbeing, and foster a strong sense of belonging. They offer a welcoming space for social interaction, friendship, and cultural connection, helping seniors stay engaged and supported.
Reducing loneliness and isolation: Building friendships and a sense of community.
Improving wellbeing: Enhancing mental and emotional health through active engagement.
Cultural connection: Providing spaces that respect and celebrate diverse backgrounds.

For many seniors, these groups become a meaningful part of their lives. Rosie, a member of our women’s support group for the past two years, knows how important these connections are. Since moving to Australia from Syria in 2017 and living alone, she has found the group to be a vital source of support.
"Because I live by myself, I feel lonely in my house. This group is a good chance for me to socialise with other people, make friends, and get involved with the community." – Rosie
Her story highlights the importance of culturally inclusive spaces where seniors can share experiences, find companionship, and feel truly connected to their community.
