Supported Multicultural Playgroups: Benefits & What To Expect

Thinking about joining a playgroup but not quite sure what it’s like? At Community First Step, our free supported multicultural playgroups are welcoming, relaxed, and designed to support children and their parents.

What is a supported multicultural playgroup?

At Community First Step (CFS), our supported multicultural playgroups are regular get-togethers for children (usually under 5) and their parents or carers to play, learn, and connect. It’s not formal child care, but an informal and flexible space where families can share experiences and build friendships. Each group is led by a qualified team member, ready to guide and support you along the way.

What are the benefits of a multicultural playgroup for children and parents or carers?

Here are some benefits we’ve seen for children:

  • Learn acceptance and empathy early: Children are naturally curious. Being around others from different backgrounds helps them understand and celebrate differences from a young age.

  • Language exposure and communication skills: Children hear a variety of languages and accents, which can boost listening skills and even spark early interest in learning more than one language.

  • Broader cultural experiences: From music and stories to crafts and food, our activities often include elements from various cultures, giving kids a richer, more inclusive learning experience.

  • Confidence in diverse settings: Children build confidence interacting with people from different backgrounds, helping them feel comfortable and included as they grow and take part in school and community life.

In addition, we’ve also seen that a multicultural playgroup setting carries benefits for families, parents and carers, which can include:

  • Connecting with families from similar or different backgrounds: Whether you find someone who shares your language or someone new to learn from, it’s a great space to build genuine friendships.

  • Feel seen and understood: Our friendly facilitators speak multiple languages and respect different cultural backgrounds. You’ll feel understood and supported from the moment you arrive.

  • A supportive space for new migrants or refugees: Many parents find that a playgroup is their first safe step into community life in Australia. It’s a place to ask questions, learn about services, and feel included.

  • Exchange parenting tips and traditions: Everyone brings their own parenting style and experiences. A multicultural group creates opportunities to share advice and stories in a respectful, welcoming setting.

What to Expect at Community First Step’s Free Multicultural Playgroups?

At Community First Step, each playgroup session is thoughtfully designed to support your child’s development while creating a welcoming space for parents and carers to connect. You don’t need to bring anything special-just come along as you are. Our friendly team will guide each session and make sure every family feels welcome and included.

Here’s what happens in our weekly playgroups in Greater Western Sydney:

  • Free Play: Children start the session with unstructured play using a wide range of age-appropriate toys, puzzles, and books. This time allows them to explore at their own pace, while building confidence and curiosity.

  • Circle Time: We come together for group songs, fingerplays, and storytelling. This helps children develop their listening, memory, and communication skills, all while having fun with rhythm and repetition.

  • Creative & Messy Play: Each week includes a hands-on activity like painting, water play, craft, or sensory exploration. These activities encourage creativity and support fine motor development, which helps children build the skills they’ll need for everyday tasks like writing and using tools.

  • Flexible & Pressure-Free Structure: There’s no strict routine or expectations. If your child wants to observe for a while, that’s okay. Our sessions are designed to be inclusive, calm, and respectful of each child’s pace and personality. Whether it’s your first time or you are a regular at our playgroups, you’ll always be met with a smile.

  • Multicultural Team: At Community First Step, we understand and celebrate cultural diversity. We offer support in languages like Vietnamese, Arabic, Spanish and Mandarin, and we welcome families from all walks of life, regardless of background.
