Ready, Set, Start! Program: Empowering Children for a Successful Transition to School

Writer: Community First StepCommunity First Step

We are excited to highlight the achievements of Ready, Set, Start! our free Transition to School program conducted in collaboration with The Parks Community Network and Learning Links. Held over 10 weeks at Wetherill Park Library, this program empowers children and their caregivers to, ensure they are well-prepared for the transition to primary school.

What is School Readiness?

School readiness encompasses more than just academic skills. It includes social, emotional, and cognitive abilities that children need to thrive in a primary school environment. At Community First Step, we are dedicated to preparing children holistically for this important milestone.

Our Collaborative Approach to Supporting School Readiness

The Ready, Set, Start! program is a collaborative effort between Community First Step, The Parks Community Network, and Learning Links. This partnership allowed for the development of a robust support system for children and their families in their local community.

In this collaborative effort, the Parks Community Network led engaging children's sessions and the Fun Friends Program, focusing on developing social skills and emotional resilience. Community First Step conducted parenting sessions and assisted in delivering select children's sessions, offering expertise in child development and family support. Learning Links facilitated children's sessions and delivered parenting sessions, equipping caregivers with essential tools to support their child's educational journey.

Empowering Children: Focus Areas of Ready, Set, Start!

During the 10-week program, Ready, Set, Start! focused intensively on nurturing essential skills such as social interaction, emotional maturity, language and communication, cognitive development, physical health, and independence. These foundational skills are crucial for a successful start to primary school and lay the groundwork for lifelong learning.

Empowering Parents and Carers: Supporting Children's Transition to School

Parents, carers, and families play pivotal roles in preparing children for school. Our program included tailored sessions where caregivers learned effective strategies to support their child’s development at home. They gained insights into child development stages, acquired techniques to foster resilience and independence, and explored practical ways to continue learning beyond the program.

Building Resilience and Confidence

The impact of Ready, Set, Start! extends beyond academic readiness. By nurturing resilience and confidence in both children and families, the program ensures they are well-prepared for the significant transition to primary school. Participants not only acquired new skills but also gained access to ongoing community resources that support their overall well-being.

We extend our sincere gratitude to The Parks Community Network and Learning Links for their invaluable collaboration and support.
